How can we start our own Homes Not Jails?Starting a Homes Not Jails is about organizing squatters and supporters. You will want to do the following: 1. Find a place where you can meet on a regular basis. After the group meets a couple of times folks can determine what the ideal meeting schedule and location would be. At some point you will want a consistent meeting place and schedule so that new people may easily find your group. 2. Create an e-mail address where people can contact you for more information about the group and meetings. 3. Utilize the internet and your contacts to announce the group, meeting place, and time. 4. Create a meeting flyer and post it in places that interested people will see it. Try to find free printing 5. Website, MySpace, Facebook, etc. - free, free, free. A phone number/voice mail would be nice but they usually cost money. 6. Utilize websites like the Homes Not Jails SF website to learn more about squatting, protesting, and networking with other squatters in other cities, states, & countries. We try to include everything we can think of on our website to assist others in starting their own Homes Not Jails, including how to open vacant buildings, how to find vacant buildings, and how to research vacant buildings. Always feel free to contact us with questions and suggestions. We are always learning ourselves :-) 7. When you have your first meeting, focus on finding vacant buildings to squat, researching vacant buildings, creating a tool library, and finding legal support for advice as well as help if squatters happen to get arrested. More information can be found among the other FAQ's we have on our website, and you are welcome to contact us for advice and additional information. |
